If you have the space in your garden this is one plant to choose. Acanthus are robust perennials with handsome, lobed foliage. In late summer, tall racemes of white flowers with dusky purple bracts appear. Used as a motive in architecture and art through ages, Acanthus is a true architectural beauty!

Agave americana is handsome desert plant used in tubs and ornamental pots. With a spreading rosette of grey-green leaves, each with a spiny creamy-yellow margin and a heavy spike at the tip. They are tightly packed and often leave impressions of the leaf margins as the leaves unfurl. Agave mckelvyana is a small, relatively rare, dwarf species of Agave from western Arizona. This little beauty forms a tight rosette of broad, bluish green, fleshy leaves with small teeth.It is one of the hardiest agaves, can take winter rain and is tolerant of drought and severe freezes.
Agave parryi var. neomexicana is a dramatic specimen. This native Mexican succulent forms a compact rosette of soft fleshy, bluish green leaves. The foliage is wide and heavily armed with dark tipped spines. With the ability to grow 60cm wide and as tall, it is one of the most cold hardy Agave species.
Agave utahensis is an uncommon plant, native to the dry limestone canyons the Mojave Desert. Often used as feature plants in Mediterranean and modern style landscapes. This gorgeous award winning Hollyhock has the distinction of being the shortest in the Alcea rosea family. “Queeny” is a dwarf Hollyhock that reaches only 60cm (24in) in height with fully double blooms. Unlike the tall varieties, it is a perennial that can also be used as an annual as it will bloom in its first year.
The unpretentious lady's mantle is extremely useful for both its foliage and its flowers. The foliage, with scalloped margins has the additional virtue of looking especially beautiful after a rain, when it holds water droplets in the pleats of its surface like many pearls of liquid mercury.
