For most of the year Ajuga is a pleasant, quiet achiever, a very versatile low growing ground cover, with evergreen, rosette-like foliage that hugs the ground like an evergreen carpet but those weeks in spring when the blue flowers appear are simply quite magical.
Anagallis monellii has one of the brightest gentian-blue flowers available. A charming and unassuming plant, easily raised from seed. Full sun encourages the most prolific display of intense blue flowers, in an endless procession from late spring to first frosts.
One of the earliest spring flowers to appear, Arabis 'Snowcap' with dense masses of snow-white flowers looks wonderful in containers or under spring-blooming bulbs, the pretty white flowers will fill the void when yearning for blooms is tugging at your core.
Arabis 'Spring Charm' gives masses of bright clusters of rosy-pink flowers. It resembles and is related to Aubrieta and is used in a similar fashion. A good groundcover, it is excellent for trailing over the edges of containers, over stones or down walls. Arenaria montana is a classic little alpine or rock garden plant, still relatively unknown to many gardeners. The plant forms prostrate mats of evergreen foliage, blanketed by large white flowers. They are at their loveliest spilling over walls and will quickly fill in the spaces between stepping stones.
Armeria Maritima “Alba” is a beautiful white cultivar. One of the easiest grown perennials and a valuable rockery plant, and one that should always be included if choice is restricted. This compact, evergreen perennial grows in low clumps and sends up long stems from which globes of pure white blooms.

Evergreen, undemanding and very long lived, it is no wonder that our little Thrift has been distributed worldwide as a garden flower. With clumps of dark green foliage, and perfect for gravel and rock gardens, it can take light foot traffic and makes a decorative edge along garden paths or down garden steps.
Aubretia at its bluest. It forms a low cushion of evergreen leaves that are smothered by blue flowers for weeks. Perfect for a rock garden in sun or part shade, used as a ground cover, growing over rock walls or in alpine troughs or containers.
The Royal series is the only Aubrieta awarded to be awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit. With supreme flowering ability ‘Royal Red’ forms a low cushion of leaves that are smothered by flowers for weeks. This variety takes a lot of beating.
Aubrieta ‘Royal Violet’ is an excellent choice, they flower so prolifically, that the blossoms almost completely cover the foliage below. Hardy to -23°C (-10°F), the foliage of Aubrieta is evergreen and provides year-round cover.
The Royal Series is the only Aubrietia awarded the RHS AGM. This soil hugging perennial carpets the ground in a profusion of bloom early spring. Plant in crevices of walls or on a steep bank to flow over into a waterfall cascade of colour.Aubrietia is a very versatile plant. They are well known for use in rockeries, but the cushion forming habit also makes it useful as a ground cover; it can be planted in beds and is perfect for underplanting shrubs. they can also be used between paving and walls, or create a wonderful foil for spring bulbs.
Campanula Pusilla is very low growing and distinguished by its production of enormous numbers of very elegant, lavender-blue bell-shaped blooms. It grows horizontally with rosettes of shiny green heart shaped foliage, rarely exceeding 10cm in height. It will spread indefinitely but generally grows to around 30cm in width.
'Snow in Summer' lives up to its name in late spring when the foliage is smothered in luminous white flowers. Beautiful used as a path edging, in a stone wall or cascading over containers. Try it amongst your spring bulbs - tall lily flowering tulips above a dense carpet of white Cerastium… Breathtaking!
