Salsify may be a chic new vegetable with the foodie crowd but it just happens to be an old-fashioned heritage root crop. This unprepossessing Mediterranean winter vegetable has a delicate taste, ever so slightly sweet, some say slightly reminiscent of oysters, so much so that it is also known as the ‘oyster plant’.

Tatsoi or Rosette Pak Choi is among the most popular of oriental greens. The spoon-shaped, dark green, evenly spaced leaves form a plant worthy to be grown for its decorative value alone. Given enough room the plants will form beautiful wide rosettes of regular, concentric circles.

Mrs. Burn's Lemon Basil
Mrs Burns’ Lemon Basil is a legendary heirloom, nothing short of an idol among fine chefs and gardeners alike. With the strongest aroma and flavour of all the lemon basils, the scent is powerful, resinous, and oily, followed by spicy cinnamon, with a strong floral note. It has a concentrated lemon oil taste, with mild spice and mint.
Basil

Part of the ornamental Spice Boys range, Basil ‘Queen of Sheba’ is one of the most ornamental varieties available. Intense purple flowers on tall flowering spikes rise above bright green, highly aromatic foliage. In the kitchen it is particularly well suited to Thai and Asian cooking, though it works just as well stirred through a simple pasta or tomato sauce.

Brussels Sprout Groninger is a second early variety noted for its great tasting sprouts. It produces medium sized green sprouts and gives a steady supply through the autumn and into the winter. Harvest October to December – perfect timing for that all important Christmas Dinner.

With a medium to late maturity time, high yield, and good cold tolerance, Brussels Sprouts ‘Igor F1’ will grow close to 3ft tall and produce about 60 to 70 tightly wrapped green sprouts that can be harvested as needed or all at once in late winter after the first frosts. Carrot ‘Purple Sun F1’ is a conical, Nantes-type carrot, with intensely coloured dark purple skin and purple centre. An early-maturing hybrid that is uniform and compact. Seeds can be sown successionally almost all year, or sown directly May to July for harvesting September to end of October.

Heirloom French Variety
Carrot ‘Jaune du Doubs’ is a beautiful old French gourmet variety that produces cylindrical roots 20 to 25cm (8 to 10in) in length with a rounded tip, a smooth surface and thick foliage. Suitable for fresh consumption, it is recognised throughout France as having a good sweet flavour. Organic Seeds.

Heritage (1927)

Carrot ‘Nantes 2’ is an excellent variety for early and successional crops producing uniform blunt-ended cylindrical roots. With good carrot fly resistance, it matures in 110 days in a warm climate and reaches an average size of 15cm. Sow February to August, for harvesting June to October.

Launched in 2005, Carrot ‘Purple Dragon’ caused a great stir at grower’s and farmers markets. With compelling health benefits and a thumbs-up from taste testers, it has quickly established itself. A Danver’s type carrot with a sweet flavour and beautiful purple skin, the deep velvety exterior gives way to a starburst of brilliant orange at the core.

Chicory Variegata di Castelfranco has a beautiful form with wavy leaves that are flecked with purple. Incredibly hardy and totally invaluable, this traditional variety is one of the easiest to grow at any time in the year.

Chinese, Mexican or Indian Parsley

Coriander ‘Slobolt’ is a variety for leaf production that is resistant to bolting and running to seed. It isn’t a hard plant to grow and of course, fresh herbs and spices have far better flavours than dried ones. Home grown herbs are infinitely superior, the difference can be quite startling.

Dwarf Lemon or Zesty Lemon Parsley

‘Dwarf Lemon’ Coriander is a delightful and refreshing combination that brings together the sharp zest of lemon and the aromatic, citrusy undertone of coriander. This pairing is cherished in a variety of global cuisines for its ability to lift and brighten dishes.

Compact, Slow bolting variety.

A modern coriander variety, fresh ‘Hacor’ leaves are bright, citrusy and slightly peppery, with a hint of spice and a touch of sweetness. The flavour is clean and full rather than harsh, holding up well in both raw and cooked dishes. The seeds are warm, nutty and aromatic, with a lemony undertone once toasted.

Italian Frisée Pancalieri resembles a lettuce that has gone horribly awry. With a pale green explosion of frizzy leaves it adds a frisky note to green salads. The large, loose collective head is dark green with a self-bleaching, creamy white interior.
Sacred Basil, Purple or Red Holy Basil

Holy basil, also called Tulsi or Sacred Basil has highly aromatic, narrow oval leaves and pink flowers with a perfumed fragrance. This reddish-purple tinted plant exudes a delicious, sweet, clove-like aroma. The hotter the summer, the deeper the purple.

Regarded as one of the most important plants used in Ayurvedic medicine, the ‘Light’ or ‘Rama Tulsi’ produces lots of flower spikes very early in the season, making it a nice ornamental plant as well as edible. The sweet aroma is very strong, even walking past it you can clearly smell its delicious scent.

Kale ‘F1 Winterbor’ is a very frost resistant medium-tall variety with dark blue-green finely curled leaves. It is unsurpassed for extra-mild, sweet Kale tang. Ultra-hardy, it is suitable for autumn and winter harvest. 28 days for baby kale; 60 days mature.
Russian or Siberian Kale, Ragged Jack
Heritage variety (Pre 1885, reintroduced 1977)
One of the tenderest kales available, with a sweeter taste than most traditional varieties, ‘Red Russian’ is delicious raw in salads and excellent used in stir-frying. It will grow to baby leaf in only 25 days, just add to lettuce to make your own mesclun mix. Organic Seeds.

Some years ago, we knew kale as a hearty winter meal, suddenly its popularity soared and ‘Kale Madness’ erupted. Now available in all manner of shapes, sizes and colours. ‘Scarlet Curled’ Kale is a highly attractive and ultra-hardy variety, the leaves intensify in colour turning to violet-red after a few frosts.

‘Black Magic’ is an improved Italian Black Kale, more cold tolerant, vigorous and slower-to-bolt than other Italian kales. They form an easy-to-harvest rosette of very dark, savoyed leaves with a flavour that is rich and mild.

Simply adored, especially in the north of Italy, Cavolo Nero is an extremely cold hardy kale that will tolerate conditions that would make most brassicas keel over. Thank heavens we have finally managed to locate Organic Seeds!

Beet Root or Leaf, Spinach Beet

Bulls Blood ‘Atlanta Red’ is a heat tolerant, summer variety which holds its red colour in high temperatures, used by commercial growers for both baby leaf and mixed salad leaves. Harvest at any stage of growth, use in mixed salads or steamed like spinach, or the roots can be left to grow like any other beetroot.

Perpetual Spinach ‘Everglade’ is a modern selection with an upright habit and dark green compact leaves. It responds well to repeat cutting and is one of the easiest and most productive vegetables for a small space.

‘Perpetual Spinach is one of the easiest and most productive vegetables for a small space. Extremely resistant to bolting, it responds particularly well to repeat cutting. With just one sowing you can feast on the succulent leaves the entire summer and through to winter.
Oakleaf Lettuce

Extremely attractive in the salad bowl, Lettuce ‘Baby Oak Leaf’ is a bolt-resistant variety with a long harvest period, recommended for the planting period from March to the beginning of May. The leaves have a buttery texture and an mellow, sweet flavour, which rarely becomes bitter, even in hotter climates.

A highly ornamental oakleaf lettuce which produces masses of deeply lobed leaves. With good flavour and texture, the compact plants will grow easily in a pot or in the garden. This variety tolerates heat very well, but also excels in cooler climates.

Heirloom Lettuce ‘Crisp Mint’ produces sturdy crops that are heat tolerant and very adaptable. A particular shade of mint green, the slightly ruffled leaves surround a crystal white heart. They retain their crispness and are delicious eaten fresh in salads.

Lettuce ‘Forellenschluss’ is an Austrian heirloom, a romaine type that has the delicate taste and texture of a butterhead. While being extremely attractive it is the taste that really should be emphasised – Slightly sweet, very soft and fine in structure, it is absolutely gorgeous.
