True Cantaloupe Melon of France
When it comes to cantaloupes, some people agree that the French do it better. Sweet and juicy, ‘Cantaloupe di Charentais’ melons are delicate fruits, about the size of a grapefruit. Sweet with a taste of honey, the thick, luscious flesh is delicious right down to the rind.
Cantaloupe x Honeydew Melon
Melon Galia is an F1 variety, specially bred for maximum vigour and uniform growth it performs reliably despite cooler summers, you can even grow it in humid or rainy climates without worry. The fruits have a spicy-sweet aroma, with a flavour more like a cantaloupe than honeydew.

A Passiflora that produces very fragrant, unusual flowers. The flowers are white, except the base of the corona which is purple; the filaments are curly, as long as the petals, 5 to 7cm across. The edible fruits possess pleasant flavour, kind of sweet and a little tart.

The Cape Gooseberry is a useful small crop for the home garden. The fruit is expensive to purchase as it is labour intensive in commercial plantings. Very easy to grow from seed, it can overwinter outdoors in mild areas or when grown in favoured positions such as the foot of a sunny wall.

Glaskin’s Perpetual was first raised in Brighton and produces large, long stemmed, bright red stalks which are juicy and hold good flavour. Very reliable and quick to establish, it is the only rhubarb that can be harvested late in the season (hence the “Perpetual”). Excellent for tarts, pies, jam, wine, forcing etc.

Rhubarb Victoria was introduced by Joseph Myatt of Deptford in 1837. It is one of the easiest to raise from seed and can usually start to be harvested one year after sowing. It produces sweet, juicy, medium sized green stalks with green-red leaves. A popular forcing variety being extremely productive for years.

Pineapple Melon, Sharlyn Melon (Heritage France 1824)
Today Ananas melons are grown for specialty markets and are somewhat rare to find. Extremely juicy, with tropical flavours followed by a faint, caramel-like aftertaste. Well worth growing at home. Sow February to May, harvest July to September.
