Vines & Climbers

Wisteria sinensis is surely the most distinctive of climbers and by far the most captivating when in bloom. This hardy climber will give stunning displays every year. Bearing large pendent clusters of fragrant violet-lavender flowers in late spring to early summer, the foliage appears once the flowers are over.

Nasturtium ‘Gleam Hybrids’ is a moderate spreading variety and the variety we would recommend for hanging baskets and for containers. They offer a particularly nice colour selection with all the shades you expect, primrose, gold, orange, red and mahogany plus a few surprises.

'Sunrise White' is a white form of the Black Eyed Susan vine. Very quick to bloom, the flowers smother the vine throughout summer to first frosts. White petals surrounded by a bold black eye, these are plants that add a dash of chic to the summer terrace or border.

The Black-eyed Susan vine has recently become a firm garden favourite. They grow quickly and starts flowering at an early age. This twining vine blooms in a bright blend of creamy white, orange and yellow flowers all with the characteristic chocolate-purple centre which inspired the common name.

A Passiflora that produces very fragrant, unusual flowers. The flowers are white, except the base of the corona which is purple; the filaments are curly, as long as the petals, 5 to 7cm across. The edible fruits possess pleasant flavour, kind of sweet and a little tart.

Luffa acutangula is a very versatile plant. As a vegetable, the leaves can be eaten in a salad, the very young gourds, known as Chinese Okra they taste like aubergine. The matured dried gourd develops into a fibrous netting. It is an excellent sponge and makes a wonderful exfoliator.

Sweet Pea 'Wiltshire Ripple' is an old variety, recently rediscovered and is a particularly heavy and long blooming vine. A unique colour combination in the fashionable ripple pattern of claret to chocolate colouring over white scented blooms. With long strong stems, they are ideal for cutting, exhibition and garden decoration.

Provide the best of all worlds for the gardener, Spencer Modern sweet peas have exceptional scent, combined with large ruffled petals and long stems that are perfect for cutting. With big, prolific flowers on long stems, 'Pulsar' produces fragrant, ruffled white flowers rippled with delicate lilac stripes and flakes.

'Princess Elizabeth', bred by Robert Bolton and first introduced in 1945 was on display when the Queen first visited Chelsea Flower Show in 1947. Recently the Queen was delighted to receive presented with a new bouquet and to hear that hear her namesake has been grown continuously for more than 60 years.

Dr Keith Hammett has bred many incredible new varieties, now referred to as the 'Modern Grandiflora's', they feature larger petal sizes and longer stem lengths and, importantly, their scent has been retained. 'Moody Blues' combines three of Keith's most popular varieties.

‘Erewhon’ is a captivating sweet pea, the standards are pinkish lilac, with darker veins, and the wings are an amazing piercing blue. Developed by Dr Keith Hammett, this Modern Grandiflora type provides the best of all worlds for the gardener. They have exceptional scent, combined with larger petal size and longer stem length.

Lovingly nicknamed the 'unicorn sweet pea', 'Enchante' is an amazing tri-colour variety in blush pink, white and soft mauve or lavender. Raised and introduced by Dr Keith Hammett, this fabulously feminine sweet pea will produce fist fulls of demure little blooms for a gorgeous display.

Introduced by Henry Eckford in 1897, Lathyrus odoratus 'Prince Edward of York' is a striking two-toned variety that features cerise standard and deep magenta-crimson wings. With usually three, occasionally four blooms to each stem, they make exceptionally fine cut flowers.

The original ‘Painted Lady’ sweet pea arose as a sport from 'Cupani' in about 1730. It was the very first named sweet pea cultivar. Recently reselected, this modern form produces larger, more numerous flowers and retains the distinctive colour combination of lotus-pink and white petals with a rich, old-time sweet scent.

A striking heirloom variety that creates a big impact, Sweet Pea 'Miss Willmott' dates back to 1901 but remains as attractive as ever, in the garden or as a cut flower. Attractive pale orange and salmon pink, unusual bicoloured flowers make a wonderful display, and have a superb fragrance.
